Fairfield's City Council has named former Vice Mayor Rick Vaccaro as the new Mayor, pending his acceptance, following the sudden resignation of Catherine "Cat" Moy.

This decision was crucial, as the council faced a 60-day deadline to fill the vacancy or leave it open until the November election.

Fairfield operates with a directly elected mayor, though the mayor holds no more power than other council members.

Opinions differed, with some council members stressing the need for an experienced leader in turbulent times, while others, like acting Mayor Pam Bertani, argued for a public vote.

Supporting Vaccaro, council members highlighted his 16 years of service, unity building, and experience.

Meanwhile, Councilmember K. Patrice Williams addressed misinformation about the reasons behind challenging Moy’s eligibility, emphasizing the importance of basic residency and voter requirements.

Moy’s unexpected resignation led to extensive council deliberations and left the city navigating its next steps.

Vallejo will host its 36th Annual Juneteenth Parade & Festival on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at the Barbara Kondylis Waterfront Green, 301 Mare Island Way.

The morning parade begins at 9 a.m. at Tennessee Street and Sonoma Boulevard, leading downtown and ending by the waterfront, where festivities run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Highlights include live music, diverse food and vendor booths, kids’ activities like face painting, and resources for wellness, job training, homeownership, and families.

The celebration, founded in 1989 by the Solano County African Family Reunion Celebration Committee, honors Juneteenth’s national legacy and African American achievements.

Partnering with local nonprofits and healthcare providers, the event offers free access to health and educational resources.

On June 12, the Solano Art Council hosts a free evening of art, poetry, and music at Temple Arts Lofts Gallery to mark the occasion.

All are invited to celebrate, reflect, and uplift Vallejo’s vibrant cultural heritage.
